Growing Leadership The eQuality Scholarship Collaborative honors and encourages northern and central California students for their service to the lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgender community by providing scholarships for post-secondary education at approved institutions. In 2007, the Collaborative awarded $61,000 to 12 courageous students. In 2008, the Collaborative will award at least ten $5,000 scholarships.

In addition to its own scholarships, the Collaborative administers two other scholarships:

  • $5000 scholarships for students enrolled or accepted for enrollment in an accredited nursing program in California. This scholarship is funded by The Kaiser Permanente Northern California Fund for Health Education. The four recipients are selected by KP Pride.
  • A $2000 scholarship for a medical student attending school in California or a California resident attending medical school elsewhere in the U.S. This scholarship is funded by The Permanente Medical Group. The recipient is selected by KP Pride.

The Collaborative is the joint effort of a group of individuals and organizations based in the San Francisco Bay Area (see list at left). It began in 1989 as a scholarship program by Pacific Gas and Electric Company's lesbian and gay employee association, now PG&E PrideNetwork. The following year, the Bay Area Network of Gay and Lesbian Educators - now Ally Action - joined the effort. Additional members have joined the Collaborative over the years, and more are always welcome.

The Collaborative is an all-volunteer effort, keeping administrative costs low.
